BlackBerry CEO says he may exit the handset business if the division isn't profitable

Blackberry Z30 | SmartphoneBlackBerry CEO John Chen says he's not opposed to completely exiting the smartphone business if his company doesn't find a way to stop losing money. In an interview with Reuters, Chen plainly stated:

"If I cannot make money on handsets, I will not be in the handset business...You have to live short term. Maybe the prior management had the luxury to bet the world would come to it. I don't have the luxury at all. I'm losing money and burning cash."

Chen added that BlackBerry could make money on shipping 10 million smartphones per year, but that's a tall order given recent history of high unsold inventory of its BlackBerry 10 smartphones. In the most recent quarter, BlackBerry shipped less than 2 million. Add in a complicated relationship with T-Mobile, fading interest from consumers, and the rise of competitors in BlackBerry's bread-and-butter enterprise segment, and Chen faces serious challenges to reach his goal of profitability.

It might sound strange that BlackBerry is facing the possibility of exiting the handset business considering it so dominated the smartphone market just a few years ago, but hard times may necessitate harder choices if Chen's turnaround plan proves unsuccessful. BlackBerry has partnered with Foxconn to meet its manufacturing needs at a lower price. The struggling manufacturer has also prioritized key markets like Indonesia and decided to continue selling its older BB7 phones as long as the market demands.

Should that strategy prove successful, Chen will have no reason to consider pulling the plug on BlackBerry smartphones. Otherwise, BlackBerry will shift to only focusing on its more successful services efforts that handles BBM and device management for businesses and governments.

With two out of three new major flagships coming with IP certification of dust- and water-resistance, it was only natural for us to start wondering whether we're entering into a new trend. But despite the initial appeal of said certification, we've often come to question the extent of its usefulness, at least at the whole. That is precisely through a poll that also sought to incite your opinion in the comment section.
Poll results: As a consumer, to what extent do you value IP-certified, water- and dust-resistance in smartphones and tablets?
So what does the crowd say? Well, apparently, there's a pretty significant split in opinions. Most of you (47.71%) consider IP certification a massive plus, but it's also telling that almost as many people (43.36) feel as if that's nothing more than a perk and nothing beyond that. What's more, 8.93% of participants feel as if the resources spent on designing a waterproofed phone could be better spent elsewhere. To them, IP certification is virtually useless.

So what do these results tell us? In all honesty -- nothing that we didn't suspect already. There's a very obvious split, almost 50/50, between those who value IP certification, and those who do not. Perhaps the most compelling argument for the former that we've come across, is usage in the bath tub and at the beach. Underwater photography sounds pretty fun, we'll tell you that.

Motorola may soon offer rewards and loyalty benefits

Motorola may soon offer rewards and loyalty benefits

Motorola may soon offer rewards and loyalty benefits
For those of you who don't know, Motorola offers a credit plan for customers who want to buy a device off-contract but maybe can't afford the cost. You may not have heard of the plan, because Motorola hasn't done much to promote it unless you've gone to the checkout phase from Motorola.com or Moto Maker. But, Motorola may be looking at ways to make the service more appealing.

It seems that Motorola has been running a survey and getting feedback on the idea of creating two different programs for Motorola Credit users. One would be a simple rewards plan, which would be free. In this plan, customers would earn points in various ways, and those points would eventually be able to be exchanged for discounts, gift cards, etc. The other option would be an "Elite" plan, which would carry a "modest" monthly fee, but would offer much bigger perks, including free phones and more.

Motorola has quite a list of bonuses that it is looking into, but none really say which plan would offer which perks. Some of the more interesting rewards are: discounts on Google products (not Motorola, but Google), free phone redesigns, free upgrades anytime, and early access to new products.

Google's new calendar design leaks, showing off the future of Android

Google's new calendar design leaks, showing off the future of Android

Google's new calendar design leaks, showing off the future of Android
A new version of Google Calendar has leaked, revealing a cleaner design that shows off the direction that Google could be taking with Android in the future. If the leak is legit, the new Google Calendar uses less color and has fewer icons than the current version. Apparently, there is some impressive animation and other effects. We could see this new version of the Google System app released during Google I/O in June.

Besides the new look, Google Calendar adds a Daily Agenda feature, which allows you to email the current day's schedule. Important parts of each day's appointments will be color-coded, and the update adds birthday reminders for the calendar view. Another section will list upcoming birthdays of your Google+ friends. Circles will now highlight each day of the month, which you can see for yourself in the screenshot found at the bottom of this page.

It is unknown whether this is the final version of the update, but those who have used it have been impressed.

Voice calling may be coming soon to WhatsApp

Voice calling may be coming soon to WhatsApp

Voice calling may be coming soon to WhatsApp
A couple months ago at Mobile World Congress, WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum announced that the popular messaging app would be adding voice calling to its feature list. The assumption has been that the service would be similar to Skype or Facebook Messenger, but there has been no word on when the feature would be added. Some new clues are making it look like voice calls may be on the way pretty soon, though.

The evidence comes from the people who work to translate WhatsApp into Hindi. Screenshots of the translation request show that WhatsApp has three new strings it needs translating: Hang up, Incoming call, and Outgoing call. Translating the UI elements is one of the last stages when it comes to adding features, so it seems like a pretty good bet that voice calling could be coming to WhatsApps fairly soon.

Koum had said that the feature would hit in the spring, so there is technically still a bit over two months in that window, but maybe WhatsApp will have it out sooner rather than later. Voice calling will be coming to Android and iOS to start with Windows Phone and BlackBerry getting the update afterwards.
